Unions organize to protest anti-strike legislation: 500 protesters rally at Province House

Chanting and taunting premier Rodney MacDonald, about 500 unionized health-care workers and their supporters demanded their right to strike be left alone. "Hey hey, ho ho, Rodney's gotta go," they chanted in a brief march around Province House and numerous times through the rally. Even though both opposition parties have said they will defeat the government's plan to introduce anti-strike legislation for health-care workers, the unions said the government measures are really anti-labour. Union speakers said the issue could one day extend beyond health workers. The upbeat crowd waved union flags and yelled "shame" when talking about the legislation and other perceived injustices. Janet Hazelton, president of the Nova Scotia Nurses Union, said nurses are over-worked and tired. "They're tired of all the work, tired of the overtime, tired of their vacations being cancelled, they're just tired.

Study Shows Need To Test More COPD And Asthma Patients For Underdiagnosed Pulmonary Disease

A new study finds that a higher than expected number of COPD and severe asthma patients had abnormal low levels of alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT), suggesting the need for broader criteria for AAT deficiency testing. AAT deficiency, also known as Alpha-1, is a widely undiagnosed hereditary disorder that is usually fatal in its severe form.

Alpha-1 is estimated to affect up to 100,000 Americans, but up to 95 percent are undiagnosed or have been misdiagnosed as having another form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). Details of the study were presented at CHEST, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians held in Chicago from October 20 to 25. Study results are being announced on World COPD Day to focus attention on the need for wider testing for AAT deficiency.

Coolermaster case is both clever and smart

THERE ARE TWO flavours of computer case we see in the labs these days. The first is by a known computer manufacturer where the design is very formulaic and made for only one, often bespoke, motherboard. Low cost is a significant factor within the mass production of these units, which is clearly evident when you open them up.

The other has more options for expandability, varied in design to suit multiple motherboards and has a greater aesthetically pleasing overall look. Coolermaster passed along one of their latest cases of the latter of late, along with the X-Craft 360 for us to browse over at The INQ.

Cooler Master COSMOS 1000

The COSMOS 1000 first caught our eye at CeBit this year, when coverage began to trickle out caused quite a stir.

Renewable and alternative energies focus of Economic Summit

The Jo Daviess County Office of Economic Development announces its upcoming economic summit to be held on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at Woodbine Bend, 3500 E. Center Road, Woodbine, IL. Highlighting the event is a panel discussion entitled "Economic Development in a Post-Petroleum World", which will feature speakers from renewable and alternative energy producers in the region.

"We're very excited about hosting this first economic summit," states Economic Development Director Pat Leitzen Fye. "The topic of how we function as a local and regional economy in the face of global changes that impact our petroleum usage especially in an agricultural county like ours is both fascinating and timely." The summit is designed, Leitzen Fye states, to serve as both a forum for educating residents about the renewable energy efforts in the Northwest Illinois region and how those efforts will change our economy, but also as an opportunity to learn about the activities taking place in economic development in the county over the past couple of years.
