Childhood Influenza Immunization Coalition Encourages Vaccination Throughout The Influenza Season

To raise awareness of the need to vaccinate more infants, children and adolescents against influenza, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in conjunction with Families Fighting Flu, declared, November 27, as the first ever "Children's Flu Vaccination Day." The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases' (NFID) Childhood Influenza Immunization Coalition commends this effort to emphasize the importance of annual influenza vaccination to protect children and their contacts from this serious and potentially deadly virus.

"Influenza claims more American lives every year than all other vaccine- preventable diseases combined," said Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, Coalition Chair, 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006), President of Canyon Ranch Institute and Distinguished Professor of Public Health, The University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.

Chiropractor bill draws criticism

A measure purported to allow New Jersey's chiropractors to legally ply their trade drew criticism Monday from others in the health industry who claim it would create an untrained class of quasi-doctors.

The bill, advanced unanimously by the Assembly Regulated Professions and Independent Authorities Committee, makes official that chiropractors can practice anything -- except surgical cutting and writing prescriptions -- taught in chiropractic college and approved by the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

A gamut of other health professions -- nurses, medical doctors, physical therapists and acupuncturists -- cried foul, saying the measure goes too far and will have an array of results including chiropractors doing school physicals, performing acupuncture or selling nutritional supplements from their offices.

Preventing diabetes is even better than treating it

America is in the grip of a diabetes epidemic. About 21 million people have the disease, and many more have pre-diabetes. And all the indications suggest that the prevalence of diabetes will continue to soar in the years ahead.

Elevated blood glucose (sugar) levels define diabetes. A fasting blood sugar reading of 126 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or higher is enough to diagnose the disease, and levels between 100 and 126 indicate pre-diabetes. But since diabetes is a leading cause of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, visual loss and memory loss, it's much more than a simple blood sugar problem.

Treatment can help protect diabetics from many of the complications that cause disability and premature death. But preventing diabetes from developing in the first place is even better.

Scott County: Group OKs consolidated dispatch

An intergovernmental agreement creating a consolidated dispatching center came one step closer to completion Tuesday with approval by the Scott County Emergency Management Commission. The commission approved the agreement 5-1, with Maysville Fire Chief Scott Roenfeldt casting the lone dissenting vote. The Davenport and Bettendorf city councils and Scott County Board of Supervisors are scheduled to vote on the agreement to create the Scott Emergency Communications Center (SECC) at a combined meeting Dec. 12.Roenfeldt wasn’t against consolidated dispatching, but opposed the agreement because he would like to see representation from rural communities. The agreement calls for a caucus of mayors of the outlying communities to choose one mayor to serve on the governing board. Roenfeldt would like to see four mayors serving on it."I think consolidated dispatching is good for Scott County," he said.Along with the rural mayor, the proposed governing board would include the mayors of Davenport and Bettendorf, the chairman of the board of supervisors and the executive director of Medic EMS.Scott County Sheriff Dennis Conard said a concern that the rural areas of the county don’t have a strong enough voice on the governing board is unfounded, saying the board will work for consensus as it moves forward.Rural communities are represented by the mayor, but also have representation by the Scott County board chairman, while the county’s largest city has one vote, Scott County administrator Ray Wierson said.Bettendorf Fire Chief Gerry Voelliger called the intergovernmental agreement "a framework document.""It is the first official step toward consolidated dispatch in Scott County," he said.

Study Shows Need To Test More COPD And Asthma Patients For Underdiagnosed Pulmonary Disease

A new study finds that a higher than expected number of COPD and severe asthma patients had abnormal low levels of alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT), suggesting the need for broader criteria for AAT deficiency testing. AAT deficiency, also known as Alpha-1, is a widely undiagnosed hereditary disorder that is usually fatal in its severe form.

Alpha-1 is estimated to affect up to 100,000 Americans, but up to 95 percent are undiagnosed or have been misdiagnosed as having another form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). Details of the study were presented at CHEST, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians held in Chicago from October 20 to 25. Study results are being announced on World COPD Day to focus attention on the need for wider testing for AAT deficiency.

Voltaren Gel Receives US Regulatory Approval As The First Approved Topical Prescription Treatment For Pain Associated ...

Voltaren Gel (diclofenac sodium topical gel) 1% has received US regulatory approval as the first topical prescription treatment that patients can apply directly to sites of pain associated with osteoarthritis.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted the approval for Voltaren Gel, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication, for use in treating pain associated with osteoarthritis in joints amenable to topical treatment, such as the knees and those of the hands.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition characterized by the breakdown of cartilage in the joint.

Clinical trials have demonstrated Voltaren Gel to be highly effective in treating osteoarthritis pain in the hands and knees, which are the body's most commonly affected joints.
